Venetian detective Commissario Guido Brunetti is called to investigate a parent's worst nightmare. A young cadet has been found hanged, a presumed suicide, in Venice's elite military academy. Brunetti's sorrow for the boy, so close in age to his own son, is rivaled only by his contempt for a community that is more concerned with protecting the reputation of the school, and its privileged students, than understanding this tragedy. The young man is the son of a doctor and former politician, a man of an impeccable integrity all too rare in Italian politics. Dr. Moro is clearly and understandably devastated by his son's death; but while both he and his apparently estranged wife seem convinced that the boy's death could not have been suicide, neither appears eager to talk to the police or involve Brunetti in any investigation of the circumstances in which he died. As Brunetti pursues his inquiry, he is faced with a wall of silence. Is the military protecting its own? And what of the other witnesses? Is this the natural reluctance of Italians to involve themselves with the authorities, or is Brunetti facing a conspiracy far greater than this one death?

Number 12 in the series, and another great read, as the ever honest Brunetti continues to persue the truth in the face of widespread incompetence, corruption, and conspiracy. Unfortunately in Italy it seems that discovering the truth rarely equates to obtaining justice.

I have enjoyed other books in this series more than this one. The ending left me feeling there was unfinished business.
There is a lot of political rambling in this book and in the end I skipped over some of these paragraphs just to find out where the plot was going.

A surprise chaperonne for my OZ VBB book, clearly someone remembered I like those Brunetti novels! Unfortunately I read that one years ago (9 to be exact, according to Goodreads) but I know other Bookcrossers in Melbourne who will happily snap it up. Interestingly it's a US edition and at the time of purchase was offering to win a trip to Venice according to the cover. I hope the lucky winners enjoyed it there, I'd go back there in a flash if I could!

Donna Leon has created an eminently credible human being in her Commissario. Her view of him is humane but that does not mean that through him she cannot express abhorrence at corruption in public life. It would not have been beyond her to manufacture a 'correct' happy ending; that she does not do so is one of the attributes that sets her apart as a crime writer. Enjoyable read.
