I got this slightly-battered hardcover from a friend who's downsizing. It's a history of silent serials, those early films that popularized the cliffhanger, with lots of behind-the-scenes information, bios of the actors, directors, and even some of the camera-folk, and loads of photos!

Amusing tidbits include the info that Pearl "Perils of Pauline" White used to refer to the "weenie", the motivating factor behind the plot - it's probably better known now as the McGuffin, and that's for the best {wry grin}.

One of the sadder aspects of the book is the realization of how many early works are now lost, with a few still photos or promotional items all that remains. This book does do homage to this by including an original script for the first chapter of a 1920 serial!
