I typically really enjoy Tanith Lee's short stories, and this collection certainly showcases the wide range of her writing talents. The thing I was not expecting in this book was the amount of rape and sexual abuse. The majority of these tales include some form of non-consensual sexual content, and that made me a bit uncomfortable. I feel like there are so many other ways to make fairy tales dark and creepy, so sticking with the same shock tactics over and over felt like a kind of lazy choice. It is the reason I don't think I would re-read this collection.
