Journal Entry 4 by pikku-kissa at Vantaa, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Sunday, March 04, 2018

Journal Entry 12 by wingApoloniaXwing at Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany on Friday, April 26, 2019
Caught it in Mainz, the book was begging me to take it home. Will do so in a month, but first it has to come with me to Berlin.

Journal Entry 13 by wingApoloniaXwing at Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany on Sunday, April 28, 2019
Still in Mainz. The kirja is patiently sitting in my suitcase, making friends with all the other books that also want to come to Berlin. It didn't want to come sightseeing... (probably afraid of being wild released).

Journal Entry 14 by wingApoloniaXwing at Frankfurt am Main, Hessen Germany on Monday, April 29, 2019
Kirja and I made it to Frankfurt despite delays and cancelled trains. No time for sightseeing, so we had a look at postcards. Off to have coffee now and then we'll board the train to Berlin...

Journal Entry 15 by wingApoloniaXwing at Leipzig, Sachsen Germany on Monday, April 29, 2019
Hello from Leipzig. It's raining.

Journal Entry 16 by wingApoloniaXwing at -- Bahn/Bus/Zug --, Sachsen Germany on Monday, April 29, 2019
But rain doesn't bother us, we're very comfortable, especially as Kirja got her own seat.

Journal Entry 17 by wingApoloniaXwing at -- Bahn/Bus/Zug --, Sachsen Germany on Monday, April 29, 2019
No, kirjakko, there weren't lots of old ladies who had to stand, just men.

Journal Entry 18 by wingApoloniaXwing at Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Germany on Monday, April 29, 2019
We arrived in Berlin in the meantime. I've let Kirja out of the bag. She's a bit... well... underwhelmed. "That's it?" ... "That's all?"... "Seriously?"... What did you expect, Kirja? Hotel Adlon with a view of Brandenburger Tor? Sorry, just a proper Berlin Hinterhof (rear yard). Such is life.

Journal Entry 19 by wingApoloniaXwing at Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Germany on Tuesday, April 30, 2019
Nicodemus (right) and ApoloniaZ (left) have found Kirja....

Journal Entry 20 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tiergarten, Berlin Germany on Tuesday, April 30, 2019
So we went sightseeing, as Kirjakko suggested. I showed Kirja KPM, short for Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur, Royal Porcelain Factory, back from the 1760s owned by our favourite Prussian king, Friedrich II (the tolerant, gay art-lover and potato fan). Kirja wanted to have a certain, most beautiful mug, but I didn't happen to have 198 € with me (and pretended not to have a credit card). She was sulking then, so we went over to....

Journal Entry 21 by wingApoloniaXwing at Mitte, Berlin Germany on Tuesday, April 30, 2019
... Reichstag... She wanted to talk to Parliament, but I explained about walpurgis night and that they are getting ready to dance on the Brocken mountain (see Goethe).

Journal Entry 22 by wingApoloniaXwing at Kreuzberg, Berlin Germany on Tuesday, April 30, 2019
Oh no! Kirja! How could you!
Berlin May Day riots have started.
She said there was nobody inside.

And now this.

Journal Entry 25 by wingApoloniaXwing at Mitte, Berlin Germany on Wednesday, May 01, 2019
kirjakko wanted me to take Kirja to a church and eavesdrop on her confession. Stupid idea. Didn't really work out.
(At least he didn't keep her hostage - I snatched her before I ran out.)

Journal Entry 33 by wingAzukiwing at Berlin (irgendwo/somewhere), Berlin Germany on Friday, May 03, 2019
Visiting the lovely city of Berlin and gosh guess what I found? A Bookcrossing book!

It is happily enjoying some Berliner beer. Local specialty! Maybe next we will find it stuffing its face with some Berliner donut? Hope it won't get jam on its face.

I offered to take it to Portugal or America, but it is quite set on going to Finland, as it has to organize some very important convention there. It won't disclose any detail...

Journal Entry 34 by wingrahar109wing at Ash Vale, Surrey United Kingdom on Saturday, May 04, 2019
Dear Kirja, it was very kind of you to take some time out of your busy schedule to meet me in Berlin a few days ago. Just a little disappointed that there were no Moomins.
Enjoy the rest of your sightseeing trip and I hope we meet again somewhere. Possibly in Finland once you've sorted things out....

Journal Entry 35 by wingApoloniaXwing at Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 04, 2019
Kirja is back with me! She saw the Mainz Convention wings and thus brought along a (half-eaten) bretzel and beer. Two bottles of Berlin craft beer - she must have liked it at the Brlo Brewery. I think she might have been in Neukölln, as that is where Berliner Berg beer is produced (no, not in Prenzlauer Berg, as the name might suggest). She is sorry about the moomins, she misses them too.

Journal Entry 36 by wingApoloniaXwing at Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 04, 2019
Kirja called it an early night (due to the alcohol? or what has she been up to?), I just tucked her in, Little My helped. She said she'd come with me to Tegeler Forest tomorrow - I think she wants to meet "Dicke Marie" (Fat Mary), Berlin's oldest tree (might be about 800 years old).

Journal Entry 37 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tegel, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 05, 2019
Does this count as a zoo? Kirja said it does - animals behind a fence. She was delighted about the boar piglets.

Journal Entry 38 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tegel, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 05, 2019
And after a long walk through the forest we said hi to Fat Mary (Dicke Marie). Goethe once did so too, in 1778. And Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt (who grew up nearby and named the tree after a not so thin cook at their little palace around the corner).

Journal Entry 39 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tiergarten, Berlin Germany on Friday, May 10, 2019
Kirja wanted to come to work with me today. She was delighted to meet the two rats and the mouse at my office.

Journal Entry 40 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tiergarten, Berlin Germany on Friday, May 10, 2019
Kirja went exploring... to a colleague's office room - and got bitten by the monster living there! (He only wanted to play...)

Journal Entry 41 by wingApoloniaXwing at Schwielowsee, Brandenburg Germany on Saturday, May 11, 2019
Kirja ventured out of Berlin today and visited Caputh Palace. She was surprised that it wasn't kaputt! She stayed in the bag when I took this release photo, probably thought she'd have to leave too. It's in the park behind the little palace.

Journal Entry 42 by wingApoloniaXwing at Potsdam, Brandenburg Germany on Saturday, May 11, 2019
Next we went to the Marble Palace, royal residence of Frederick William II of Prussia.
No picture with Kirja, light rain, she didn't want to get wet.

Journal Entry 43 by wingApoloniaXwing at Potsdam, Brandenburg Germany on Saturday, May 11, 2019
Not enough palaces yet! Kirja also wanted to see Cecilienhof Palace. I simply copy from Wikipedia:
"Cecilienhof was the last palace built by the House of Hohenzollern that ruled the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire until the end of World War I. It is famous for having been the location of the Potsdam Conference in 1945, in which the leaders of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States made important decisions affecting the shape of post World War II Europe and Asia."

Journal Entry 44 by wingApoloniaXwing at Wannsee, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 11, 2019
Next stop: The famous bridge of spies, Glienicke Bridge. Kirja was afraid of being traded for a spy novel.

Journal Entry 45 by wingApoloniaXwing at Mitte, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 12, 2019
Kirja wants to say Hi now from Brandenburg Gate.

Journal Entry 46 by wingApoloniaXwing at Mitte, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 12, 2019
As Kirja is very interested in espionage now we went to the headquarters of the German Intelligence Services, "Bundesnachrichtendienst". We didn't dare to enter though.

Journal Entry 47 by wingApoloniaXwing at Mitte, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 12, 2019
Kirja went to rabbit field! Kaninchenfeld is an arts project by Karla Sachse: lots of brass plaques in the shape of rabbits, set in the tarmac. It's a reminder of the huge colony of rabbits that used to live on the death strip of the Berlin Wall.

Released 2 mos ago (5/16/2019 UTC) at Oak&Ice Eisdiele - Bücherkoffer in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Germany

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

"It is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a whole book."

- Friedrich Nietzsche

Journal Entry 51 by wingApoloniaXwing at Friedrichshain, Berlin Germany on Thursday, May 16, 2019
Kirja didn't want to stay on her own at Café Sibylle, even though there were many other books. So she came back home with me.

Journal Entry 52 by wingApoloniaXwing at Friedrichshain, Berlin Germany on Thursday, May 16, 2019
By the way, Kirja went Geocaching today. She was surprised to see that tiny books were released in some Geocaches. In a nesting box up on a tree!

Journal Entry 53 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tiergarten, Berlin Germany on Friday, May 17, 2019

Journal Entry 54 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tiergarten, Berlin Germany on Friday, May 17, 2019
Kirja

She tried too.

Journal Entry 55 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tiergarten, Berlin Germany on Friday, May 17, 2019
Kirja helped us celebrate that work is over for this week. (Actually it wasn't that bad... But then this bottle turned up...)

Journal Entry 56 by wingApoloniaXwing at Schöneberg, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 18, 2019
Today Kirja visited a breeding centre for roundabouts!

Journal Entry 57 by wingApoloniaXwing at Schöneberg, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 18, 2019
And she found the house where Marlene Dietrich was born in 1901.

Journal Entry 58 by wingApoloniaXwing at Moabit, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 18, 2019
Then she begged not to be released at the "Bücher Tankstelle".
Okay.
(I think she has plans for tonight.)

Journal Entry 59 by wingRochester74wing at Gießen, Hessen Germany on Saturday, May 18, 2019
Kirja seems to have a very decided mind. She showed up at my door to watch the European Song Contest with me, what a suprise!
She was just in time, food is ready and now we are going to dress up really posh. I guess we are having a late night...

Journal Entry 60 by wingRochester74wing at Gießen, Hessen Germany on Saturday, May 18, 2019
Well, I am having a late night.
Kirja got drank really quickly after realising that Finland won‘t be in this final and fell asleep under the table. I had to kick her twice because she started to snorr.
The Netherlands won , my favorits had been Switzerland and Australia.
I wonder if Kirja will still be there when I will wake up late with a headake...

Journal Entry 61 by wingApoloniaXwing at Wilmersdorf, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 19, 2019
Kirja is back! She was a bit hungover and tired, so we started off in quiet, staid Wilmersdorf. And went straight to Wilmersdorf's great weekend attraction: The "Thai-Wiese" at Preußenpark. It's not all Thai, but 90% Southeast-Asian. We were spoilt for choice....

Journal Entry 62 by wingApoloniaXwing at Wilmersdorf, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 19, 2019
... and finally settled for yummy spicy papaya salad. Great taste, just like in Thailand.

Journal Entry 63 by wingApoloniaXwing at Wilmersdorf, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 19, 2019
I also showed Kirja one of Berlin's most beautiful old subway stations.

Journal Entry 64 by wingApoloniaXwing at Dahlem, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 19, 2019
Hard to believe, but this is also a subway station.
The thatched roof burned down twice, in 1980 and in 2012. Then it was built up using some synthetic replica.

Journal Entry 65 by wingApoloniaXwing at Dahlem, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 19, 2019
And here Kirja sat down on a bench at the platform. She was slightly irritated.

Journal Entry 66 by wingApoloniaXwing at Dahlem, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 19, 2019
And here we are at the Domäne Dahlem, which is a working farm cum agricultural open-air museum.
When we came to the fence all the sheep, one after another, slowly got up and left...

Journal Entry 67 by wingApoloniaXwing at Dahlem, Berlin Germany on Sunday, May 19, 2019
Kirja was delighted by this horse's sense of fashion.

Journal Entry 68 by wingApoloniaXwing at Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin Germany on Thursday, May 23, 2019
Last weekend must have worn Kirja out, she was rather quiet and well-behaved the last days. She watched all those books gathering in my suitcase and sneaked in, too - as if I would leave her behind, haha!
I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to let her travel in my hand luggage anyway, what if she misbehaves during the security check?

Journal Entry 69 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tegel, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 25, 2019
Home sweet home... it's getting closer! Kirja confirmed that I found the right gate and is waiting patiently for the plane.

Journal Entry 70 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tegel, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 25, 2019
Kirja is happy now. The plane has arrived. Why does it say Austrian Airlines? Never mind.

Journal Entry 71 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tegel, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 25, 2019
"Austrian Airlines flight OS224 to Vienna is now ready for boarding. Please proceed to gate A08." Kirja, stop! No! It's the other plane. A09... I think she only understands Finnish.

Journal Entry 72 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tegel, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 25, 2019
We finally got onto another plane.

Journal Entry 73 by wingApoloniaXwing at Tegel, Berlin Germany on Saturday, May 25, 2019
Looks good.

Journal Entry 74 by wingApoloniaXwing at Vantaa, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Saturday, May 25, 2019
We arrived. Kirja is grumpy, she had to give up her seat to some Finn. And she didn't expect to be welcomed by a Finnish cyberman.

Journal Entry 75 by wingApoloniaXwing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Saturday, May 25, 2019

Journal Entry 77 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Sunday, May 26, 2019

Together again! To celebrate that - and ApoloniaX's first visit to Finland - we sat at Restaurant Kappeli in the regular table where Finnish national poet Eino Leino used to sit. Kirja has lead much more interesting life than I for the last few months. Thank you ApoloniaX and everybody else. I think I owe it Kirja to finally read it as it returned home like Lassie. Annelis wants to read it after me.

Voihan rotta. Parasta tässä kirjassa ovat journaalit. En oikein syttynyt Hilja Valtosesta. Varattu Annelikselle.

Rats. The best things about this book were journal entries. Hilja Valtonen did not light my fire. Reserved to Annelis.

RATS? Somebody said rats? Yes, here! Nicodemus the Rat here. Where has that weird Finnish book gone?

Journal Entry 84 by wingkirjakkowing at Sipoo, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Monday, June 17, 2019
Mitäs Nicodemus tänne tupsahti? Ai niin, sanoin voihan Rotta.
Kirja jatkaa matkaa Annelikselle tänään. Otettiin poseerauskuva ja nyt ukkostaa.

Where did Nicodemus come from? Oh, I said Rats.
The book is on its way to Annelis today. Posed for the photo and now it is storming. Must be some ApoloniaX-wibe.

There is no trusting in me, Kirjakko. I totally had forgotten, that yesterday you were supposed to come and fetch the Signe Brander book. I did hang the book on the wall on Sunday to be sure and there was no need for me to remember. This morning I took the garbage pliers which were hanging on the wall and found the Book and two others.

Journal Entry 87 by wingAnneliswing at Kerava, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Wednesday, June 19, 2019
Wow! On page 50 I found a name I've heard often. It is Špalernaja which is a remand prison in St. Petersburg (Leningrad) or at least it was still in the early 1930's. The maternal grandparents of my husband were living in Keltto next to Leningrad. They had a farm and grandpa did daily transportations for the city by horse. In 1930 it was demanded that the farm must be given to the local kolkhoz. Grandpa did not agree and he was taken away by soldiers. At first nobody knew where he was taken. Then somebody adviced that some food package be send for him to Špalernaja. If he is there, the family will get an acknowledgement for the package and so happened. The Finnish Consul was contacted, because the family had Finnish passports. Grandpa was released, but the family was given two weeks to leave for Finland. So they did. They could not take much with them. Some cousins were married to Russians. They stayed behind. My mother-in-law never wanted to visit the cousins in Leningrad, but her sisters did.
This picture was taken in the late 1920s when the family was still living in Keltto. My mother-in-law is the girl on the right.
