Detective Bill Corde looks down at the beautiful face of the girl in the mud, and cannot know that his own life is about to turn into a terrifyingly real nightmare. For the girl's killer is now on the trail of Corde and his unsuspecting family. His wife. His teenage son. His imaginative but vulnerable daughter, Sarah. Sarah - who alone knows the identity of the man who took the life of the girl ... the man who may be responsible for further deaths. And the lesson Bill Corde is about to learn - the lesson of her death - is an education that no one will ever forget.

Loved this. He kept you guessing as to who the murderer was, I was never sure and the end of the book kept you gripped. There were a couple of time when the writing annoyed me, in the written speech, but not enough to spoil the book. Already got the next address so will be passing it on straight away.

At last a ‘caught’ journal entry, picked up on Sunday 12 August at a BookCrossing MeetUp. Thanks – earthcaroleanne - for bringing it to Old Gang Meetup, Sun 12 Aug for me! Whoop - an early Deaver I have not read.

A cracking read because it is a clever and thoroughly convoluted plot, but then again, it’s a Deaver novel so that’s no shock. With, notably, a plethora of red herrings and actual fishermen, we are treated to lots of schemes and intrigue, enough in fact for two books. However, there are some squirrelly places where all this frenetic jangle becomes too much. Too many individuals and convoluted plot configurations and too many ‘mad’ characters. Still it’s an undeniably grippy-grabby rush of a read. Glad to have finally read one of the early Deaver’s I had not found before now, thanks!

Two of the characters here are affected by dyslexia in ways that have massive impact on them and for those around them. Dyslexia’s a topic I am always interested noting the appearance of in novels as I am affected by it myself. Though the character here affected by the condition is also presenting with dyscalculia and dysgraphia. I’ve got admit I don’t really understand the implications of all these conditions and how together they would impact on an individual’s capabilities. Brave decision to tackle these in the form of a novel and for sure the conditions make for dramatic potential I also wish however that the novel had raised clearer awareness of some of their challenges.

Released 5 yrs ago (9/23/2018 UTC) at Bloody Scotland Venue in Stirling, Scotland United Kingdom

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Not picked up at the meeting mentioned above so instead I plan releasing it at BLOODY SCOTLAND, the Scottish International Crime Writers Book Festival at a venue somewhere during the day.

MONDAY 01 OCTOBER 2018: Fate intervened and I couldn’t manage to reach BLOODY SCOTLAND so I took this book, as one of six BookCrossing books, instead to WIGTOWN BOOK FESTIVAL, Sun 30 Sep 2018. Happily I was able to pass these into the hands of eager readers I chatted to in the crowds.

What a treat WIGTOWN BOOK FESTIVAL is, a ten day long, unique chance to hear loads of fascinating authors, attend many intriguing different kinds of bookish events, visit a craft products tent hosting many local treasures from delicious food to gorgeous you-cannot-resist jewellery, and attractive exquisitely-made decorative items. And, like lush icing on the cake, and generously layered between, there are splendidly brilliant bookshops everywhere and you cannot help but travel through the most glorious green Galloway countryside to get there – stunning destination for so many reasons!

Oh, and praise must be heaped on the Children’s Programme it’s utterly inspirational!

Please note my WELCOME TO BOOKCROSSING burble, in the ‘journal entry’ above, and I hope you enjoy this travelling book!
