Eugenio Bortuzzi has been named Prefect for Vigata, a regional representative from the Italian government tasked to oversee the town. But the rowdy and unruly Sicilians don't care much for this rather pompous mainlander, nor the nediocre opera he's hell-bent on producing in the new municipal theatre, "The Brewer of Preston" it's called and the Vigatese are gearing up to wreak havoc on the performance's opening night.
A joyful historical novel set in the irresistible Sicilian town Camilleri immortalized. The Brewer of Preston is a comic masterwork from the award-winning, international best-selling author of the Inspector Montalbano series.
I picked this up as a change from working my way through the Inspector Montalbano series. It's set in the same town, and is loosely based on some historical fact, but it's told out of order, so just as you find out the latest event, you have to wait to find out the why and the wherefore. Entertaining, but you need to concentrate a bit on what's gone before.
