Northern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader. Hidden in the hills, their sprawling ranch is eerie and run down, but to Evie, it is exotic, thrilling, charged—a place where she feels desperate to be accepted. As she spends more time away from her mother and the rhythms of her daily life, and as her obsession with Suzanne intensifies, Evie does not realize she is coming closer and closer to unthinkable violence.

MY REVIEW:
Loved reading this book set in California in the summer of 1969.
I found the narrator Evie just innocent enough for this coming of age novel to propel me through it in one afternoon, eager to learn more.
I found her magnetic pull to Suzanne both beautiful and dangerous.
A brilliant read. .
(I always add physical postage stamps to my packages. If you are not a collector yourself, check out the I collect postage stamps because... thread to find them a happy home.)
Thanks so much for sending me this book! I look forward to reading it soon.
This was a compelling read. I loved the description of Evie as a middle-schooler, obsessing with her friends on how she looked and acted. The author nailed what it's like to be that age.
Then, when Evie becomes fascinated by Suzanne, I could picture it so vividly. Suzanne was such a unique, and yet barely described, character. The story that followed reminded me a lot of the Mason murders. I couldn't help but wonder if the author was inspired by that for this novel?
