I've wanted this strange little book for some time, and finally decided to give myself a copy for Christmas. It's about the "incorruptibles", usually saints whose bodies have resisted corruption - or so it is claimed. But this story takes that concept and runs with it, off into a very strange plot: in a flooding, near-apocalyptic world, the beautiful and two-thousand-years-dead Saint Silvan is spending his off-display hours magically roaming the world of the similarly-preserved, offering beauty products...

Turns out there really is a shrine to Saint Silvan, complete with a beautiful effigy of the dead youth - complete with the gashed throat from his alleged martyrdom. Whether actual relics of Silvan are present is unknown, as is whether the tale of his life and martyrdom are even true - but that effigy is definitely evocative, and I loved the way it inspired this book.

The novel itself goes into some delightfully unexpected places, all on the theme that the preserved dead have some kind of existence, whether it's the jewel-encrusted Saint Valerius or the preserved body of Lenin. And it seems that other lifelike replicas have a similar kind of life, even if they were only modeled after real people and never were associated with their physical remains: one amusing interview is between Silvan and a detailed anatomical model, whose opened abdomen leads him to exclaim "You must have been martyred most terribly!"

But it's not all quips about different saints and effigies. There are growing clues that the current-day world is ending slowly and terribly, with Silvan taking time to fret over the few humans he's observed recently. And something's happening to the incorruptibles, too, with hints that perhaps Silvan's own long existence is due to end...

Very unusual and enjoyable story!
