Thanks so much for the wishlist books - and the BCing-and-geocaching tour on this snowy day! I've enjoyed several books by this author, and look forward to this one.

Later: Another oddball look at characters on different sides of the economic spectrum: here, "Eck" Chetwode-Talbot, a rising star in investment funds who's taking full advantage of the apparently-unlimited boom (we know how that will turn out), meets Charlie Summers, a down-on-his-luck chap who, by appearances, could be Eck's brother... Despite this, the book takes its time pulling their lives together, with most of it dealing with Eck and his growing realization that the bubble he's been riding is about to burst.

Charlie, on the other hand, has a somewhat-sleezy entrepreneurial spirit, and comes up with a comically-weird scheme to get rich - only to find that he, too, is subject to the whims of economic change.

Torday does play with cameos from other books. Eck himself had a small role in The Irresistible Inheritance of Wilberforce, and his cousin Harriet, whom he's attempting to court in this book, featured prominently in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. And there's Eck's friend Henry, who has a small part to play in The Girl on the Landing... The spot-the-reference bits are rather fun!

While I didn't find this book as tight or as compelling as the others, I'm glad to have had a chance to read it - and saddened that Torday's writing career was cut short.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I left this book, bagged against the elements, on a tree in the charming little walkway between W. Pearl and the Elm Street parking area, on this icy day. Not the best weather for an outdoor release, but the ice on the trees was quite lovely - and perhaps the sight of an unexpected book will cheer someone up. In any case, I hope the finder enjoys the book!
