Ooh, this is a complicated plot: a man is found wandering in the desert outside Las Vegas. He has no memory of even his own identity, but cards in his wallet lets authorities know that he's an English professor who disappeared a week ago from the campus of Columbia University. By the time his wife drives across the country to pick him up, doctors have discovered a removed a brain tumor.
The couple returns to New York, where the professor tries to connect with a woman with whom he knows he's supposed to have a loving and intimate relationship. His wife sees the same person she's been married to, but realizes that her husband may never truly return to her.
Into this already fraught scenario enters a scientist who's doing ground-breaking research. He invites the professor to sign up for an experiment, which appeals to a man who's lonely for his past life and looking for a new start.
