The story opens as the narrator, a famous and rich author, finds that his wife is missing. He has no idea what happened: was she abducted or did she walk away from a marriage that's gone stale? until one day he met Mikhail, who claims to be Esther's lover. He promises to take the narrator to his wife, and along the way, the narrator explores about love and life.
While I loved The Alchemist, I haven't really enjoyed Paulo Coelho's other books, so much so that I am afraid to re-read The Alchemist, thinking that I may be disappointed. I'd say this book is the closest to The Alchemist, with its messages of love and life hidden in the various stories and encounters the narrator chanced upon along with way.
