Another strange and wonderful book by Donoghue.
Lib Wright, a young nurse trained by Florence Nightingale and tested in war, takes a position in a small Irish village. She quickly discovers that her job is to watch 11-year-old Anna O'Donnell closely, in concert with a devout nun, 24 hours a day. The two have been given this job to verify claims that Anna is living on nothing. She has not eaten anything for four months, presumably. Because Anna is so devout herself, she believes she does not need to eat, that God will take care of her.
News of this "wonder" has spread, and people come to visit the child every day, bringing gifts and hoping for miracles in their own lives.
Nurse Wright is sure that the whole thing is a fraud and is determined to find out where the food is coming from. Nevertheless, she is taken by the young girl. She comes to believe that, whatever the truth, Anna is honest and tells what she believes.
There are clearly interests in the community that want the fame of the Wonder, and those voices that question are beaten down. It is difficult for Lib to find help in getting to the truth.
An engaging look at a superstitious community, a young girl with character, a determined nurse, and a reporter of scandal. Only reading it will give you a real sense of it.
