I've enjoyed several books by Alan Gratz, including Samurai Shortstop and The Brooklyn Nine. When I saw this hardcover at Barnes and Noble I had to give it a try.

It follows three different children from different cultures and time periods as they cope with becoming refugees: Josef, a Jewish boy in 1930's Germany; Isabel, a Cuban girl in 1994; and Mahmoud, a Syrian boy in 2015. The effects of their respective situations are shown here, on the children and their families as well as on their communities. And the stories, though widely separated in time, are connected in the end...

The author's notes at the end describe the factual basis for each story, and include recommendations for readers who want to take action on behalf of modern-day refugees.
