"Katie Carr, doctor (and self-declared "good person"), has just had an affair. It's not really her fault; she is, after all, married to David: angry, cynical, negative (though undeniable funny) and a real pain to live with. But then David meets DJ GoodNews, astonishingly effective faith healer and do-gooder of the unbearably smug kind. And now David is good. Too good actually: "a liberal's worst nightmare", he starts to put theory into practice giving away their kids'toys, reaching out to the hopeless and homeless in a very personal and, for Katie, disturbing way."

Um, sadly I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I had hoped. It was a mildly entertaining (in parts) but just didn't really keep me gripped. An intellectually curious view of life for a young married woman with kids, written by a man in his mid-40s and I was fascinated to understand how he got inside the character but that's where my interest ended.

I haven't realise that I've read this book before, but some scenes felt familiar and searching around, I found another, older copy of the book on my shelves.
Usually Nick Hornby's characters tend to be odd and weird somehow, but here I felt that they were just odd and unreal, without any other trait to write home about, so they didn't win me over. The plot didn't enthused me either, especially after using some kind of metaphysical -or supernatural or whatever you may call it- twist to set things into motion.
I appreciated what the author tried to do but I felt that somehow he lost the plot, both literally and metaphorically. The pace of the book is uneven, the narrator's voice and the themes of the book and the way Hornby treated both these themes and the narrator's character irked me, while the ending was kind of disappointing. I think this book keeps making circles that lead nowhere and the ride is not particularly pleasant.
All that said, I liked parts of the book and the author's wit surfaces here and there. It provides food for thought too. I just think that this novel isn't very memorable and certainly it's not this author's best!
