I got this handsome hardcover from the Little Free Library on Rocky Hill Road in Plymouth, MA, while dropping off some books of my own. It's an in-depth look at the history of the Thames, from antiquity through modern times. Illustrations include old manuscripts and woodcuts, paintings and photographs. The book highlights the river's commercial and political influence as well as its geographical aspects, and there are some surprising and fascinating anecdotes included. One chapter opens with "There is a curious connection between the Thames and severed heads", and describes the old custom of mounting the heads of traitors on spikes on London Bridge and the even older one of Neolithic peoples apparently placing groups of skulls in the river for purposes of their own.

From the river's source in Tewsbury Mead to the Thames Barrier to the estuary, the book conveys the history and significance of the waterway.

[Since I've started reading the marvelous "Rivers of London" series by Ben Aaronovitch, starting with Midnight Riot, I have a greater appreciation for the Thames and the many other rivers, quite a few of them lost beneath the spreading metropolis.]
