A Hercule Poirot Mystery. First published 1937 by Dodd, Mead & Company. Third Dell Edition. First printing—September 1982. New York, New York: Dell Publishing. Paperback, 252 pages.
From back cover:
MURDER BY MAIL
Hercule Poirot opened the envelope and read death between the lines. Unfortunately, the terrifying message came too late. The lady who had written it was already in her grave, her bizarre will had been approved by law, and the case was officially closed...
...until the greatest detective of them all lifted the lid on a viper’s nest of greed, deception, and jealousy. Poirot vowed that this time he would not be too late to stop a brilliant and baffling killer who was about to strike again....
Blurb:
DEATH HELD THE STOPWATCH
Emily Arundell had been a lady whom everybody loved and no one ever would have wanted to kill—or so it seemed at first. When Hercule Poirot entered the case, he had a hard time finding a single suspect.
But as the master sleuth peeked beneath the masks of a beautiful society swinger . . . a handsome scientist . . . a faithful servant and a pair of specialists in the occult . . . Poirot found himself with only too many possible murderers and just one chilling certainty:
Unless Poirot quickened his pace, the price of wasted time would be death . . .

Poirot Loses A Client (aka Dumb Witness) by Agatha Christie - Good
When this was first offered up as a RABCK I didn't recognise the title. Of course, in later years it was retitled. Regardless, one I hadn't read and didn't own.
Emily Arundel is a maiden lady of mature years. She lives with her servants, a lady companion and is surrounded by the children of her siblings who all have an eye to the main chance. They all come to stay one weekend and all hope for a handout whether it be to pay off debts, send children to school, or finance a fiancé's research.
More importantly, she lives with Bob...her dog. He has a nifty trick of bouncing his ball down the stairs for people to throw back to him. So when Emily takes a tumble down the stairs in the middle of the night, he gets the blame. But Emily is not so sure and writes to Poirot for help....but there is no response and then she passes away. Little did she know, the letter was delayed and Poirot is sufficiently interested to investigate anyway.
Was the fall planned? Was she subsequently murdered? Poirot is going to find out.
Nice little story and sufficiently different from the TV adaptation...in fact, there's a different culprit.

Received from the one book a month thread. Thank you very much! I really like Agatha Christie so I'm sure I'll enjoy this.
When Poirot receives a confused letter from an old lady that has taken two months to reach him, he goes to her house and discovers that she's already dead, and her last-minute will already executed. Poirot is convinced there's more to it, and assisted by the faithful Hastings, not to mention Bob the dog, he soon believes there to be murder. A Christie classic.
