I found this ex-library hardcover at a local thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy.
Wonderfully disturbing story here. Something alien has arrived on Earth, something that drives humans and animals mad if they see one, and the beings/creatures/whatever seem to be everywhere. Civilization has collapsed, with scattered survivors sometimes taking extreme measures - blinding themselves and their children - to avoid the possibility of seeing the things, while others, including protagonist Malorie (who couldn't bring herself to do that to her own two kids) try to learn to live with eyes shut, except for when they're safely indoors. But we find out that she's at the end of her rope, as her fellow survivors have fallen one by one, and now she can no longer sustain her little family. She's heard of a safe community down river, but can she and the kids get there while navigating entirely blind?
The trip itself is harrowing, but even more so are the flashbacks to the early days of the disaster, and to the coming-together - and falling apart - of the companions who occupied the house and forged their own family... for a while...
An intriguing element of the story is that the characters have no idea who or what the beings are, or whether they intend harm or are even aware of the effect they have on humans and other Earth creatures.
Very atmospheric, intense, and involving story!
[There's a short TV Tropes page on the book.]
