Unbroken Thread: An Anthology of Plays by Asian American Women

A fantastic collection of plays by Asian-American women: "Paper Angels" by Genny Lim, "The Music Lessons" by Wakako Yamauchi, "Gold Watch" by Momoko Iko, "Tea" by Velina Hasu Houston, "Walls" by Jeannie Barroga, and "Letters to a Student Revolutionary" by Elizabeth Wong.
As an anthology, I think "Unbroken Thread" is a great sampler platter of some of the best-known Asian-American women playwrights. It's an excellent starting point for discussion no matter what play you pick up to read. However, I've read two of the plays in the anthology and couldn't think more differently about them. I felt that "Tea" was melodramatic and hyper-exoticized (Who actually says, "Like bamboo, I sway in the wind..."? No one!). But I felt that "Paper Angels" was lovely and very moving. Whatever you pick up, however, you'll be reading the work of a good craftsperson with an interesting story to tell.
