I just saw the 2014 film "The Tale of Princess Kaguya" by noted Japanese animator Isao Takahuta,. The source tale is in this collection as "The Moon Princess." "Princess Kaguya" is a beautiful film. As this book has a new timeliness for Takahuta fans, I have decided to register, read and release it.
Amazon Editorial Review
Classic European fairy tales are familiar to many, but fewer readers are acquainted with tales from faraway lands. This charming anthology of thirty tales and legends from Japan are as unique and delightfully intriguing today as they were when first published.
Author Grace James selected the stories from many sources—the Ko-ji-ki, or Record of Ancient Matters, which contains the mythology of Japan, as well as tales told from memory and handed down from generation to generation. Included in the collection are enjoyable accounts of "The Singing Bird of Heaven," "The Wind in the Pine Tree," "The Star Lovers," "The Peony Lantern," "The Sea King and the Magic Jewels," "The Beautiful Dancer of Yedo," the title piece, and twenty-three other enchanting tales.

Japanese mythology and folklore combine in these tales, which rarely seem like fairy tales of European tradition. The characters are more types than fully developed personalities. Unfortunately, James' writing was often forced and over wrought. Still the stories speak, often poetically. "Green Willow" was perhaps my favorite. Lovers of distant times and cultures will be enchanted. The marvelous illustrations by artist Warwick Goble were the treasure of this book as far as I was concerned.
