A book that I recently acquired for the purposes of giving it away. It’s one that I loved so much that I will always be looking for copies at 2nd hand stores to give away.

My review:
t's funny what makes us give a book 10 stars instead of just 8 or 9. Is this book as consequential or as brilliant or as whatever as some books I have given 8 stars to? No. But I knew early on it was a 10-star book and that feeling only got stronger as I went along. It is one of those books that you want to hug to your chest and twirl around the living room with at some points, and bury beneath the blankets while you sob in bed over at other points. It was recommended to me by multiple people and I know I will recommend it to many others.

Ove is a practical man. In many ways, I saw a resemblance to my father -- get stuff done and don't talk about it. I think the resemblance between Ove and Sonja's father is one of the reasons she loved him so. I immediately became attached to Ove and I feel a bit ashamed of the fact that my job makes me one of the white shirt "men" whom he so disliked. Ove is a good man. Solid. Functional. Hard-working. No nonsense. The book is clearly written (and translated -- which is a remarkable feat) in his voice, which enables the reader to bond with him immediately. (I saw a few reviews by people who didn't like the book -- very few -- and they really did not recognize Ove or his voice in the book. Sad.) I loved the character of the cat (no name) in this book -- he is much like Ove. (Perhaps Ove is very cat-like in his approach to life, which helps me to feel such a sense of attachment to him.) The description of the cat looking at Ove as if he owed the cat money totally resonated. In so many ways Ove and the cat are the same.

I could say many more things about this book, but they would either not make sense to someone who hadn't read it, or spoil the surprise, or both. I will say that the description of Ove's condition by the doctor perfectly encapsulates the book, in many ways. And I will never look at a Saab again without thinking of Ove.
