This paperback was among the books donated to the Nashua Public Library for distribution to the Little Free Libraries in town. As I enjoy Deaver's short stories (including his first Twisted collection), I wanted to read this one before releasing it.
The stories here are all very twisty indeed, sometimes showing cons-within-cons, sometimes turning the reader's expectations upside down, and often featuring characters who aren't what they seem - for good or for ill. One tale features Deaver's quadriplegic detective Lincoln Rhyme, first met in The Bone Collector.
It's hard to pick favorites, and harder still to talk about the stories without giving things away, but I did especially enjoy "Tunnel Girl," which takes a "person trapped in rubble" plot and darts off in unexpected ways. And the story "Afraid" was creepy, disturbing, and thought-provoking. (Deaver talks more about that tale at the end of the book.) Oh, and "The Westphalian Ring," which is set in the world of Sherlock Holmes - and pits a shop owner against the famed detective.
