The subtitle covers it well. This would make a good book club read as I am sure it would provoke a lot of debate. As the author will be giving a talk at the Unconvention in Ipswich I will turn this into a book ray.

Thanks ardachy. This looks really interesting. I’m seeing Rahar109 on 24th March at the Walthamstow Meet Up so I aim to have read it by then.

A frustrating but worthwhile read. I do struggle with any writing style that intellectualises and is very wordy. I just feel it’s unnecessary. I also find it counterintuitive to be very academic when talking about animism and earth religions which are all about connecting in a much more simple, straightforward way. Some of the writing style was about the characters but not all. I did find myself mentally editing the first chapter to take out some words which didn’t feel to me like they needed to be there. My imagination can complete the picture. I don’t need the author doing it all in such detail. I see what you mean about a book group ardarchy! I normally don’t write much in the way of a review but this did get me trying to work out what I liked and didn’t like about the book. I’m glad i’ve read it and I look forward to the author talk. Should be very thought-provoking.

A very wordy book - it could have done with quite a bit of editing. I found myself skimming through a lot of the philosophising as there was just too much of it. I didn't like the ending - I felt as though I had wasted my time ploughing through the book.
Maybe the next reader will appreciate it more than I did.

PMing earthcaroleanne for her address.

Received today. Unfortunately, judging a book by it's cover, this isn't something I would pick up. It is heavy, dense and has small print. Not a good combination for someone who reads on the bus. Plus, only Poodlesister has rated this and although I don't read reviews before reading a book, I couldn't miss rahar109's comment "Hope you enjoy it more than I did! " I have such a backlog with being away at the convention, I'm wondering if I should bother.

I’m afraid I agreed with everything Rahar109 has said.

This has taken me a long time to read. At page 30 I thought about giving up but soon after something persuaded me to keep going. Part 2 is mostly about their philosophising which was too much for me. I started reading the first line of each paragraph and skimming the rest. Even reading this way I felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere and seemed to be about half way through forever. Then Part 3 just got weird. I ploughed on but the reason for me continuing to read was squashed on P376 – I felt cheated. And the ending was just a big disappointment.

I always think that self-publishing shows an extreme arrogance, and this book most of all is in dire need of a good editor: for example when Theo, supposedly erudite, makes a grammatical mistake it puts the reader off their stride, but primarily because it really needs to be cut down. The main part of the book, and presumably King's purpose in writing it, is the philosophical arguments put forward about humanity's relationship with nature, and this to me was the interesting part of the book. The glove puppet characters he's created to put forward different arguments are never well developed and this makes the other parts of the book, the romance and most especially the murder mystery, not work at all well. Instead King keeps diverting into name dropping about films and books he's read, and shows a strange obsession with Viennese cafes and coffee, also he clearly expects most people to believe in reincarnation. I notice that reincarnation is a theme in the author's other books, so maybe it's something he believes himself? The way King seems to want to show off the many subjects he knows about makes him seem a bit like Theo. Unfortunately King also comes across as extremely sexist in a few places.
Coming back to the core philosophical part, I like the way that multiple viewpoints are presented, though I find the American characters Tyler and Ray especially dislikable. Tyler's view that an animal such as a polar bear can just be represented as data is vile, and his disgust when it's suggested that a human could be that way in the future is telling. I find their viewpoint on nature and climate change distressing, and the way that refugees' lives can be bandied about in terms of carbon tax is pretty unpleasant too. It's never very clear what Theo himself, presumably representing the views of the author, actually thinks.
All in all it's a shame King decided to self publish - I think the basis of this could be turned into a good book, but as it stands it's hard going to read and doesn't fit together well.Coming back to the core philosophical part, I like the way that multiple viewpoints are presented, though I find the American characters Tyler and Ray especially dislikable.
