I've had this hefty hardcover on my keeper shelves for ages, and think it's time it went traveling. It's a look at methods of execution in England over one century, 1770-1868, with examples from notorious crimes as well as more obscure ones. There are illustrations, quotes from period broadsides, trial transcripts, and newspaper articles, as well as commentary from a variety of people about the attitudes towards execution - including the "carnival" aspect vs. the lesson-to-the-public concept. Lots of depth here, and food for thought, plus some fascinating historical detail.
I'm adding this to the Biographies of Things bookbox, which will be on its way to its next stop after the Memorial Day weekend. Enjoy!
I'll be honest---I chose this one without really looking at it because it was so heavy! Ha!! However, This time in history is a little before Austen through a little after the Brontes---my favorite time in English history. Therefore, I must at least browse it.
