Found in a Little Free Library in Annandale, Virginia.

Mortimer the zombie tries to find a date for the ball but can't seem to impress the girls. The illustrations are hilariously absurd. The story is simple but it's fun to pick up all the little details in each scene. If you like Tim Burton's style, you'll probably like this.

Bringing this to today's BCinDC meetup in Alexandria, VA.

I spotted this in a Little Free Library and didn't pick it up, though I wanted to. I visited the same LFL later with some BookCrossing friends, and the book was still there! My friend took it to read and then passed it on. I just gave it a read today (appropriate for the week of Valentine's Day).

It's the story of Mortimer, a zombie, who wants to find someone to love. Unfortunately, there just aren't a lot of women out there fond of dating the undead. Desperate, he runs an ad in the paper and hangs out at the punch bowl all night at the Cupid's Ball. Not a lot of people go for the punch. And at the end of the night, a lovely zombie woman falls into it! Better late than never. It's love at first sight.

It's a pretty straightforward story, but it's the kooky word choice and illustrations that really bring it to life and make it somehow the perfect combination of enchanting, revolting, and hilarious. I especially loved the worms who hang around Mortimer, showing up in many scenes. They wear little hats and read little books. They even wear little bowties at the ball!

I loved every moment of this, from the zombies' awful smiles to the dog with the eye falling out of one socket. It's adorable. And I do love a happy ending as well :-)

I love this book! The story is cute, but the artwork is amazing! His reading lamp is a brain. He has a candelabra made of a hand. And the worms are so great! They clean the house, they play poker, they appear in little cameos in every single picture. Highly recommend! I may reread this again before the next meet-up.
