I really enjoyed reading this book. The author has added a lot of interesting and detailed descriptions about the things that the watchmaker made, my favorite was the octopus :)
Halfway the book I think the story lost some of its pace, but luckily it made up for it at the end.

I can't say I understand the plot but the characters are interesting enough and I like the watchmaker's creations, particularly the octopus.

Arrived yesterday with the post.

Edit 24 December:
I enjoyed the read very much, especially the first half of the book putting down the characters and their strange capabilities. Towards the end I have to admit, I got a little bit lost in the plot. Who was doing what why?

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

A very atmospheric story, though I sometimes had difficulties deciding who said what. Perhaps that is one way to explain why many readers have difficulties following the plot towards the end. Did something like the japanese "model city" really exist in London around that time, I wonder?
But, of course, I love all of the watchmaker's little inventions, especially Katsu...
The book is now on its way to the next reader. Thanks for sharing the book!

and here it is! perfect timing, I just finished my other book :-)

Looking forward to reading it - and I am curious whether I also will be lost a bit !

Journal Entry 12 by wingkiki66wing at Gauting, Bayern Germany on Wednesday, March 28, 2018
I loved it! especially Katsu of course :-)

It took me some time because there was so much information and so many details. It was also very interesting to learn something about watchmaking.
Very interesting for me was the description of the underground trains in these days. I was really aware that they ran by coal and therefore the tunnels and stations were full of soot.. Next time I am on a Munich S-Bahn I will remember how lucky we are now ;-)

I also liked Mori and his ways and capabilities, but didn't like Grace at all.

Will send it on as soon as Penelopewanders gives her ok.

This has rolled in with a few others and was waiting when I returned from holiday yesterday. I'll try to get to it as soon as possible, but work has begun and things are getting busy (already!!). Thanks so much for making this book available and for sending!

I debated about adding the "paranormal" label when I reviewed this on Goodreads, but until I figure out how to edit the labels there and can include magic and fantasy (I guess I won't add clairvoyance"), it would give the wrong idea.
I really loved this book. I think it took until the first section with Grace for me to really get caught, but once in, I was in completely. Only work (and taxes due soon!!??!!) kept me from reading it in one fell swoop. Towards the end I did drag my heels a bit as I was not so happy with how things were going and was trying to shy away from conclusions I did not want to reach. Fortunately the author did swerve ever so slightly, although my feelings towards Grace, already gravely damaged by the tree-cutting incident, were at best tepid towards the end.
Strangely this reminded me a bit of another book I loved when I read it a number of years ago (and of which I'd like to see the recent film): Call Me By Your Name. I think it was the underpinning of yearning and "not daring to be expressed" desire, the subtle touches and the awareness of space between two beings... So very moving. I'm so grateful to have stumbled over this, thanks to a bookcrossing ring. Thank you for making it available and for sending.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley - Good maybe better

It's 1883/84 and someone has set off a bomb at Scotland Yard. The clockwork timer links it to Mori, a Japanese Master clock maker. It is up to Nathaniel ("Thaniel, my father was Nat") Steepleton, a telegraph clerk at the Home Office, to prove his friend innocent and solve the crime.

Somewhat steampunk, this is a nice little mystery, with a touch of romance, but the star of the show is Katsu - who wouldn't love a clockwork octopus with a 'mind' of its own and an penchant for stealing socks! Every home should have one.

My only quibble is that I felt the last few chapters were a sudden change in direction and a hurried wrapping up of the plot. Maybe that's because I didn't see it coming and had totally missed who the real villains were. Other than that, thoroughly enjoyable.

Have got the address for the next in the ray and will post out tomorrow.

This has arrived safely with me in London. Thank you very much to all BookCrossers who helped it come my way. I’ve just about finished my current read. Hope to read and forward this one to next in Ray this week.

I really can’t decide if I like this book or not. There were so many fascinating, magical and random elements - which normally I would love - but here they just combined in a confusing jumble that I couldn’t understand. On the other hand I couldn’t stop reading to try and unravel the books mysteries. The setting was a modern Victorian (I think the author took many liberties with time and added much to the plot that factually would have been impossible?) and I really admire her imagination in creating the plot and it’s setting. Aside from the magical clockworks, I really loved Grace and felt awful that things didn’t go her way. Or did they? And I’m really not sure I like or understand Mori. I suspect/hope a future sequel book might clarify things? I really love the cover artwork!

Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. I have the next readers address and will try to get this moving again tomorrow.
