This fair-condition paperback was among the books donated to the Nashua Public Library for distribution to the Little Free Libraries in town. I'd read it before, and wanted to register it before I drop it off.

This is one of Haines' "Mississippi Delta" series books featuring P.I. Sarah Booth Delaney; here, she's trying to defend a local woman who claims to be a healer but who could not save her own infant, and is now being investigated for the child's death. From some of the cover-quotes I'd expected it to be an amusing "cozy"-type mystery, but while it does have some aspects of that it's a good deal darker than I'd expected; the main character is mixed up in some very thorny issues, and while those issues are all too real and the decisions tough to make, I found it a bit bleak. Genre prejudice, maybe; a mystery paperback with "down-home delightful" in the cover-blurbs sets different expectations than if this had been packaged as a psychological thriller {wry grin}.

I left this book in the Little Free Library on this warm, sunny day. Hope someone enjoys it!
