I brought this book home from today's BC-in-DC meeting to add to my ever-growing TBR mountain range.
While I have enjoyed the Gaiman books I've read, I often find myself struggling to describe the stories, or the explain what it is I like about them. This is certainly not an exception to that trend. Gaiman is a talented storyteller, who paints vivid pictures with his words, using a relaxed prose style that is easy to read. And his stories are quirky and weird, without crossing so far into the absurd as to lose the reader, but certainly fanciful enough to satisfy. All of that is true of this book.
Fat Charlie has a good job as an accountant and a lovely fiancee, and his life is going smoothly, at least until he receives word that his father has passed away. His father was always an embarrassment to Fat Charlie, but duty compels him to fly back to Florida for his father's funeral, where he learns that he has a brother he never knew about. When this long-lost brother shows up at Fat Charlies apartment in London after the funeral, Fat Charlie's life gets much more interesting (in a Chinese curse kind of way). In short order, his brother, Spider, steals his fiancee, makes Fat Charlie the subject of a police investigation into questionable money transactions at his firm, and generally makes Fat Charlie's life more difficult.
In the end, Fat Charlie must come to terms with his father's legacy and the truth about who Spider really is before he can regain control of his life. But when the dust settles, he will find that he is a very different person.

This book passed through my hands at yesterday's BCinDC meetup. I read another copy a while back and wanted to share my thoughts here:
---
Though it's set more or less in the same universe as American Gods, I don't think you need to read that one first to enjoy this one. It's the story of Charles Nancy, who discovers his recently deceased father is actually the spider god Anansi, and he has a brother he never knew. The story is fairly light as these things go, with some very funny bits and the general tomfoolery you can expect from any Gaiman book. I enjoyed it, but I would only recommend it to someone who already enjoys Gaiman. Not the best book to get introduced to his work with, but a decent read all the same.

This book didn't come home with me, which means someone else grabbed it or it was released in a Little Free Library in the Fort Hunt, VA, area.
