This is an amazing book. A must for everyone to read, not just women! It will be finding it's way into the wild very soon.

Well, bookfrogster is working hard. I havn't read this yet but I will do. It looks a bit alarming, but we'll see how we go.
Well it took me a long time to read this book, it is long, complex and falls into two parts, the first, delineating the stultifing life of young married women in the fifties and sixties rang many bells for me; the later polemical part, the 'dawn of feminism', I found less satisfactory in its characterisations (I needed quite often to check back to see who was being written about) and the passage of Val to aggressive misogyny seemed rushed. It was almost as though it had to be got in, somehow. I was also a bit irritiated by the 'almost autobiographical' voice, the placing of Mira in a sort-of third person, which meant that her central position and progress was often compromised. This meant that I was never really able to get hold of this character, who was of course really the author. However, the passages about her relations with her own parents, sons, and the dreaded Norm were really well written and insightful. I'm glad to have read it. I'm going into Edinburgh for some Festival tickets and will leave it somewhere.

Left it in the Ladies (seemed appropriate!) Don't worry, washed my hands first.
