I enjoyed The Unquiet Bones, the first book in this series, and was glad to find this fair-condition ex-library softcover on Better World Books. Love the gargoyle on the cover, too!

This is another enjoyable visit to the 14th century, with surgeon - and bailiff of the local manor - Hugh still trying to get over his heartbreak at the marriage of the woman he adored to another man. But when the manor's beadle turns up dead and badly mauled, Hugh has to investigate the crime, and finds himself at risk along the way. Lots of good period detail here.

By the end of this volume he's solved the crime - and may have found a new love-interest, though (of course) there are complications there... Will have to see what happens in the next book!
