This is the tale of a young unmarried mother, at a time when that had a real stigma attached, set mainly in Edinburgh. Picked up for a secret purpose.

Don't want to chance any spoilers, so off it goes to the next person in a certain book ring.

As Tom goes to visit his mother Maggie each Sunday, she forgets more and more of the present - she mistakes Tom for his father Michael, and she calls the staff of the nursing home the names of people from her past. The other thread of the story goes back to Maggie's youth, as just after the war she's thrown out by her parents for getting pregnant when unmarried, and follows her desperate attempts to find work and a place to stay with the world against her. An enjoyable read although it's awful to think that many young women may have found themselves being treated as Maggie is in that time.
