I got this slightly-battered hardcover from the charity-sale shelves at a local Hannaford's, for another release copy. I'd enjoyed the book when I first read it, which was, I think, shortly after the 1983 miniseries
aired; while it's a mistake to compare books and film or TV versions too closely I think the story held up pretty well in both cases, and the book's certainly an engaging family saga. What sticks in my mind are the many instances of cruelty, though - some physical abuse, but mostly psychological torture, people manipulating others, being cold, lying, or even (at one intense moment) telling the truth in such a way as to deliver the utmost pain...
[There's a TV Tropes page
on the book and mini-series, with some entertaining tidbits.]
