This book starts with a day in the life of a wealthy family and their friends on holiday in the early years of last century, contemplating the possibility of a trip to the lighthouse of the title, and ends with the actual visit many years later. Told through the thoughts of various characters, it is a reflection on time, relationships and art, among other things.
