The Hate U Give is about Starr, a girl who still lives in the neighborhood but attends a fancy private school. While at a party, she sees her childhood best friend Khalil. She realizes that he has been selling drugs, but he doesn't want to talk about it. Instead, he says that he's been wanting to talk to her dad, a former gang member. Shots ring out at the party, so they flee. He offers to drive her home. On the way, they are pulled over and the police officer shoots Khalil. Starr is the only witness to the shooting. The book deals with the fallout from Khalil's murder and how it affects everyone from Starr and her family to the rest of the community.
