I got this charming hardcover at the Book Cellar, and was pleased to have another release copy - not least because the bright-eyed cat on the cover looks like my current cat, Raffles (see the bookplate illustration).
This book is very charming indeed! The brief text was originally published in 1949 (!), and has its own appeal in its description of a little cat's reaction to the approaching holiday. She notes the chill in the air, the scent of Christmas trees, the "crackle and slip" of tissue paper... She even goes out to explore the snowy woods, though cats "usually don't like snow, but this little cat did. All the smells of the earth that she knew were frozen and buried in the white snow..."
After spying a very special visitor on that snowy evening, Pussycat paws at the window to come back in - her people are good about this, apparently - "but they shouldn't have let her stay in the living room where they were wrapping up packages and hanging things on the tree. And this is why. Pussycat pounced. She pounced on everything. And she waited to pounce with shining eyes and switching tail." Very familiar scenes to anyone with cats!
Eventually Pussycat settles down by the fire, for a cozy end to the story. And the illustrations throughout show a delightfully bright-eyed cat eyeing the decorations, batting at ornaments, rolling in the snow, gazing up through bare branches at the sound of sleighbells... I adore the pictures!
