I first read this book after hearing the author speak at the 2010 BookCrossing Unconvention in Boston, and enjoyed it very much. So I was delighted to come across this good-condition hardcover at the Milford NH public library's ongoing book sale - another copy to release!

It's an intriguing story, with a great sense of place, and with tantalizingly believable snippets from the "Lace Reader's Guide" opening each chapter. (The whole idea of telling fortunes by "reading" patterns in lace seemed so perfect that I was ready to believe it was a true traditional art, but it seems that Barry made it up. However, she said that people have begun practicing lace-reading now, so who knows?)

The story focuses on a woman with a tragic past and a troubled family history; when sudden deaths and disappearances trigger a closer look at the town and her own past, surprising secrets are revealed...

I plan to leave this book in the entrance of the Peddler's Daughter when I stop by for lunch, after doing some geocaching on the nearby Riverwalk. Hope the finder enjoys the book!
