I bought this from the 2 new paperbacks for £5 table in Sanders/Wyevale garden centre, Brent Knoll while travelling from the Forest of Dean to Plymouth during our recent holidays, chosen because I've enjoyed other novels by this author but not yet this one . . . .

At first I found this story, narrated by a female lawyer, Evelyn Gifford, set in London at the time of the 1926 General Strike, rather tedious. It dragged somewhat - but eventually came alive for the last 100 pages or so, and then I couldn't put it down, upgrading itself from Only OK to Good!
