7 out of 10

I got this fair-condition softcover at the Lucky Dog thrift shop in Nashua. It's the first of a trilogy set in a post-apocalyptic world, in which anti-technology forces have held sway for centuries. Pitted against them: the Oyster, the icebreaker of the title, a ship built to sail for a hundred years - and which has been struggling along for three times that, as strife on board has destroyed the logs and historical documents and deprived the crew of their true purpose. Orphan girl Petrel, the only one on board not part of the three cliques, is befriended by two talking rats, who are the keepers of the key to "the sleeping captain". She's also the one to spot a stranger, a boy, apparently frozen on a passing iceberg... His arrival triggers dramatic shifts in Petrel's world, but will they be able to wake the sleeping captain in time to save the ship?

Interesting setting and premise, with some nifty shifts between high-tech and personal relationships.
