I got this fair-condition softcover from a local Savers thrift shop, for another release copy.

I had read some of the xxxHolic series that runs in parallel with this one, and was intrigued enough to want to read this series as well. Bought some volumes, and read others from the Nashua Public Library, which has a good manga selection. [I watched the anime adaptation of the series and enjoyed it very much indeed. It's got perhaps the best musical score I've heard in an anime, or in any film or TV series come to that. I liked the music so much I bought the CD, and now when I read the manga I can hear the soundtrack in my head!]

This volume introduces us to Princess Sakura of Clow, whose older brother Touya is fond of her but tends to gripe a good deal - especially about her friendship with Syaoran, the son of an archaeologist. (Touya and his trusted friend/advisor Yukito resemble the characters of the same name in Cardcaptor Sakura, yet another CLAMP series that ties in to this one.) Sakura and Syaoran explore some strange ruins, and suddenly Sakura is struck by a mysterious power; her memories turn into feathers and vanish, leaving her unconscious. And we see a sinister figure who's clearly behind it all...

Meanwhile, a gleefully-bloodthirsty ninja swordsman is laying waste to anyone who comes near him, and his princess tells him he needs to learn how to get along with people without relying on violence.

And in yet another place, a handsome wizard has to flee his own country out of fear of the magically-sleeping King Ashura, as Bad Things Will Happen when the king wakes.

Syaoran, Sakura, Kurogane, and Fai all go through magical portals to the same place: the shop of the "dimension witch", Yuuko (of xxxHolic), who - in exchange for a hefty price from each of them - will give them what they ask. This results in the four of them being sent questing across dimensions and time, to different worlds; Syaoran seeks the feathers of Sakura's memory, Kurogane just wants to find a way back to his home, and Fai wants to keep traveling as far from King Ashura as he can get. Can this disparate group get along?

By the end of this volume, the group has reached a world where people make alliances with magical beings called "kudan" - and then have battles for status and power. Continued in Volume Two!

[See its TV Tropes page for more background and interesting tidbits about the intersection with xxxHolic and other CLAMP series. There are spoilers, mostly masked, but still, be warned!]
