I love the idea of a library where everything one has read during their lifes is kept, but most of the end of the story I found rather unsettling. But I guess it had to end this way to not create too many "Werthers" hunting their idea of eternally living in their own lifetime library... maybe? And the fact, that Mr. Openshaw can keep track of Alexandra's life by reading what she read somehow disproves what he tells her about being a reader when she arrives at The Library,... or what do you think? (Trying so hard not to include too many spoilers^^)

Der Bücherbus ist bei mir angekommen. Vielen lieben Dank für den Ring und das Schicken :-)

Im großen und ganzen eine schöne Geschichte über Bücher und das Lesen. Die Wendung, die das ganze aber kurz vor Ende nahm, fand ich aber nicht gut erklärt. Das ist eine der Stellen, an denen klar wird, dass es doch eine sehr kurze Geschichte ist, die ruhig etwas ausführlicher hätte sein dürfen.
Die Illustrationen der Autorin fand ich passend und stimmungsvoll.
In jedem Fall freue ich mich, das Buch (Comic? Graphic Novel?) lesen zu dürfen! Es war mal etwas anderes und hat mir gefallen.

Seit Donnerstag auf dem Postweg zu Lesenmachtfroh.

Der Bus ist heute angekommen. Ich werde den Band lesen, wenn ich meine aktuelles Buch bald beendet habe. Danke für den Ring und fürs Schicken.

Ich habe den "Comic" schon vor eingien Tagen gelesen und immer noch einen schalen Geschmack davon. Auf der ersten Seite war ich bereits verwirrt, dass in Chiciago die Vögel noch im Spätsommer vor Sonnenaufgang zwitschern. zwei Seiten weiter steht "...because he looked at me over his befocals. " Wenn die Autorin nicht auch die Zeichnerin ist, müsst sie doch wissen, dass se da eine Halbbrille gezeichnet hat. Über eine Bifokalbrille muss man nicht drüberschauen.
Was mich wundert, dass einige Vorleserinnen das Werk nur sehr spärlich kommentiert haben. Am spontansten und ehrlichsten war wohl Forts Freund, der es doof fand. Da kann ich ihn gut verstehen.
Die Helden der Geschichte macht von Anfang an einen farblosen Eindruck.
Die Begeisterung von Neil Gaiman kann ich nicht teilen.
Sonst hänge ich bei BDs oder Graphic Novels oft in den Zeichnungen und ergötze mich an Details. das ist mir hier nicht passiert. Irgendwie fehlt da die Dynamik.
Obwohl es kein Fall für "Lesenmachtfroh" war, möchte ich mich für den Ring bedanken und um Nachsicht für meinen Verriss bitten.
Vielleicht schätze ich andere Graphics danach um so mehr.
Gerad habe ich bemerkt, dass die Liste im Forum um einiges umfangreicher ist als beim Buch.
Ich werde also freuju anschreiben.

I liked the idea of one's own personal library very much. However, for some reason, I expected more of the book and thus felt a tiny bit disappointed. I agree with Forti that the story could have done with a little more depth and detail.
Anyway, it was worth reading! Thanks for sharing! :)

Wurde mir in Seesen übergeben und wie mir mitgeteilt wurde, muss ich es vorsichtig behandeln , wegen lockerer Seiten

Die Bilder gut gezeichnet und aussagekräftig und die Liebesgeschichte hat mir gefallen, aber umgehauen hat mich das Buch nicht , gibt Besseres .
Ich bin aber auch keine begeisterte Comic Leserin und hatte mich wegen der Büchergeschichte zum Ring angemeldet, da ich an Buchsucht leide.
Neil Gaiman schreibt garantiert besser , seine Bücher haben mich gefesselt und begeistert , aber das hier eher nicht .

The book arrived in the morning and I fetched it from the "Packstation" during lunch break. Thanks for letting me read it.

There's one BIG complaint that I have about this book: it is much too short. Other than that, I liked it a lot, although it does not have what I would call a happy ending. In a way, I'm afraid that my little review might contain more words than its subject - just kidding.

Alexandra and her partner had had an argument, so she took a walk in the neighborhood in the small hours of a slightly moist night in late summer, enjoying the fresh, cool air when she came upon the Night Bookmobile, waiting at the curb, its interior lights glowing in the dark, a reggae song blasting from its sound system. The friendly librarian invites her to come in and have a look at the shelves, and she accepts.

For various reasons, I find this scenario very enticing:
• Staying up late (or should one rather say "early"?) is something every avid reader knows and likes.
• Two of my favorite books ("Blue Highways" by William Least Heat-Moon and "Rabbit, Run" by John Updike) deal with journeys started after an argument and especially Updike's description of Rabbit Angstrom's nightly car trip is a literary masterpiece. Least Heat-Moon begins his book with an explanation of the term "blue highway" that would fit equally well for the Night Bookmobile: "On the old highway maps of America, the main routes were red and the back roads blue. Now even the colors are changing. But in those brevities just before dawn and a little after dusk - times neither day nor night - the old roads return to the sky some of its color. Then, in truth, they carry a mysterious cast of blue, and it's that time when the pull of the blue highway is strongest, when the open road is beckoning, a strangeness, a place where a man can lose himself." Alexandra's decision to enter the Night Bookmobile and to join its driver in this little spaceship of education and entertainment fits right in with the first two sentences of the first chapter of "Blue Highways": "Beware of thoughts that come in the night. They aren't turned properly; they come in askew, free of sense and restriction, deriving from the most remote of sources."
• As a bibliophile, I like to be in a library, whether it's a large scientific one at a university or a small one at a local school. Each library has a distinctive smell all its own and the atmosphere is always soothing.
• There are two other books that I like a lot whose protagonists find sanctuary in their favorite library, one is Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes", the other is "All My Friends Are Going to Be Strangers" by Larry McMurtry.

Because Mr. Openshaw (the Night Bookmobile's librarian) tells her that the Library is not hiring, Alexandra undergoes training to become a librarian herself and obtains a job at a Chicago, IL library. She reads voraciously and tries (mostly in vain) to find the Night Bookmobile again. One decisive encounter takes place at Wrigley Field, which immediately brought to mind the famous line "When the lights go on at Wrigley Field" by the Statler Brothers.

The book tells us in various ways that one cannot have one's cake and eat it, too. Whenever we make progress in our development as a human being, something old has to go out of our lives.

With two of my BC acquaintances - Patschouli and Runningmouse - deceased during the last few days, the story became even more poignant for me.

Did I like this book more because of the fond memories it brought back than for its own plot? Impossible to decide, but one thing's for sure: I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

One last thing: if people in Chicago, IL tell you to "go to 'el", they are not necessarily being rude.

A quick read before lights out ;-) I'm in two minds about the book. I like the idea of a library where everything I read is collected and I can understand Alexandra's determination to find the bookmobile again. The ending was a bit abrupt though and we don't know enough about Alexandra's life inbetween the times she meets Mr. Openshaw to really understand her decision. Even though I suspected this is the only way you can work for The Library it was abit of a surprise. But she looks happy in the last picture...
