I got this good-condition hardcover at the ongoing book sale at the Dunstable MA public library. It has a very quirky premise - it's narrated by an about-to-be-born fetus, who's been an involuntary witness to a plot between his mother and his uncle to get his father out of the way so they can be together. [If this sounds familiar, just wait - that's not the only "Hamlet" concept in the story.]
I wouldn't normally be all that thrilled to have a story being told in utero, but this narrator starts with "So here I am, upside down in a woman" and keeps on snarking from there. And philosophizing, too, well beyond the bounds of the experiences he may have had up to this point.
Lots of fun stuff here, from the expanding plot to the police investigation (don't miss the bit about the spiders), and with our hero-in-utero trying to figure out what, if anything, he can do either to thwart the plot or preserve the liberty of his mother. Since he really can't do much of anything, it puts a whole new perspective on Hamlet's procrastination!
At the climax, it seems that there may just be something that the baby can do - but will it work? Things get very, very tense...
A wonderfully strange book - glad I picked it up!
