1972, Serena Frome Cambridge student is recruited by MI5 for a program called "Sweet Tooth", that funds young writers whose politics align with those of the government (Cold War not over). Serena is chosen because she is a compulsive reader. Of course, love gets in the way of her mission. More than a classic spy novel, this is a wonderful story about fiction, writing and reading. McEwan is masterful, even if this is not my favorite book of his.
