The Way Home: How a Naive Single Mom Built her House in the Forest
8 journalers for this copy...
Description on Amazon.com: "What does it take to achieve a life's goal, to follow a precious dream to reality? Money? Influential connections? Knowledge or skills? In the spring of 1983, Terry Faubert hadn’t much of those as she set out to move to the country with her young son, her cat, and little else. Longing to raise her five-year-old in tune with nature, she planned somehow to make a life for them out in the forest. She would need to find land that she could purchase with her scant savings and to build a house they could live in. She had never built anything before and had no idea how to go about it.
Small and slight, naive and inexperienced, Terry had little awareness that spring day of the hurdles and challenges ahead. This is her story—a story of determination and perseverance, of improbable ideas and unlikely successes."
Very excited to read this interesting memoir by a fellow bookcrosser,
Brookler . The first three chapters were a bit hard to follow with many different people and places and not much description to connect them and put them in context. Living in British Columbia, I am familiar with most of the places mentioned and the general area but still found myself a bit lost in the first few chapters. So I imagine it might be more difficult for other readers. Once I got to Chapter 4 and the land was picked and house building was underway, the memoir gained momentum and became much more focused and I enjoyed the book. I cannot imagine myself ever doing what Brookler has accomplished. The experience is well worth the read.
*A different bookcrossing label is used.

Updated to show a picture of the house in 2018. I met Brookler (the author) in November 2019 and got the picture of the house with some new sidings and a whole new level built in.

Well, I was really impressed with how Terry got her house built, particularly the amount of stuff she managed on her own in between help from friendly neighbours! What an interesting life she has had.
I have seen this on another wishlist, so will hopefully get it travelling again soon. :-)

I enjoyed reading Terry's and Jody's story about moving out from Vancouver into the Canadian woods. With sheer determination and a lot of hard physical work she sets out to build a new home for her and her son.
A quick read, enjoyable and never say a woman can't build her own house!
This book will now go back into Plum-crazy's book ring " Read it, leave it, swap it"

Faubert's account of her search for some land for her and her young son to live on, how she builds a house and overcomes obstacles. It's impressive how with little money and doing almost everything herself, she follows her dream. There are a few things like carelessness of the environment and of the health of her cat that wouldn't be so acceptable today but back in the early 80s was much more the norm. I wonder if in Canada there are still people who are carving out a life in the wilderness like this - in the UK it's very expensive to buy land and you wouldn't get planning permission to build, however I've heard that a friend of a friend camps on land he's bought in Wales.

It was very interesting to read about Terry's quest to buy a piece of land in the forest and build a house. I can only admire her gumption! Her descriptions of everyday with her son and his birthdays, for example, made me think that he had a wonderful mom and wonderful childhood growing up in the nature.

My former landlady finally let me know that this had arrived! Thank you dacejav - I've been looking forward to reading Brookler's book ever since reading about it. It will have to sit on the rather gigantic Mt TBR for a little bit, but thank you, yay!
