To the Bright Edge of the World: A Novel

An atmospheric tale set in Alaska.
**Update: Going through my shelf, I noticed that in a hurry to send the book out, I forgot to write my impression of the book. I enjoyed this book a lot, though I liked the author's first book, The Snow Child, more because of its magical qualities. The two books are both set in Alaska and touch on myths, and both are atmospheric works that transport me to a different time and place. And yet, they are as different as can be and I am very impressed with the diverse range of the author. This is one author I will continue to follow.

Newlyweds are parted when Colonel Allen Forester leads an expedition into uncharted areas of the Alaskan Territory while his pregnant wife Sophie waits behind at Vancouver Barracks (now WA/OR border). Told largely in the form of letters and diaries, the Colonel and his companions encounter wilderness and the natives of the area, while Sophie braves small-town minds and societal expectations.
