A fascinating subject - Hottentot woman brought to London to be exhibited becomes a cause selebre for the anti-slavery movement. And Rachel Holmes is a good writer. But I have to say that this did not grip me as much as Holmes' book on Jenny Marx, which is superb. That was a big, meaty subject, and sustained a big book. The subject of Saartje Baartman is interesting, but not really enough to sustain this whole book.
