Bought at cheap bookstore. C. S. Lewis refers to Bunyan several times in his (non-fiction) writings. I thought I might see what's there.

Having set my hand to the plow (again) I was determined to finish Pilgrim's Progress this time. Not far into my pilgrimage, I was set upon by Mr Unfinished-Dissertation, a delightful fellow at the commencement of our acquaintance but whose company has of late become quite irksome. He droned on and on with his promises of riches beyond the horizon. "How," said I, "can gold and silver compare with the inheritance I have hope to achieve?" Heedless, he pursued me. His relentless exhortions were soon joined by those of Ms. Cute-Curly-Blonde-Two-Year-Old at whose bidding I found myself mired in the bog of Potty-Training, a truly odious place which has doubtless been the end of many a pilgrim.

Nonetheless, buoyed by my companions, Mr. Sincere-Faith and his wife Mrs.Practical-Insight, I hope to finish this brief sojourn with Bunyan in due time and thus be strengthened and tempered for the more important journey of Christian discipleship.

This book is hard slogging, but has a lot to say. I think it's easy to forget just how completely we are commanded to give ourselves to Christ. We shy away from things that are hard thinking a "pretty good" life will be good enough and so miss some of the great joys God wishes to grant us. Bunyan's book was a good reminder of this.

I am not a student of Protestant literature, but the ideas presented in "The Pilgrim's Progress" are pervasive in Christianity today. I believe John Bunyan was sincerely converted and divinely assisted in this work. Well worth a thoughtful and introspective read.
