In 2014 a friend of mine turned 50 and wanted three of her old friends to accompany her in Berlin for a week. My first time there and thanks to our Berlin Greeter Michael, I was directed to Another Country, a SH-bookshop which specialises in English books, booze and expat evenings...
This book was rescued from there.

A writer who has a country house in Yorkshire and a town house in Hampstead can't be all bad. I've spent plenty of time in both of them.
For some reason I enjoyed chapter one much more than the one of Hampstead. He does not tell things which I would mention, if writing about Hampstead. Well, the Heath of course, but there are so many places worth mentioning which must have been there already when the book was written.
Pic from the Heath.

One should read this book in a slow pace. No rushing. The trouble is, I have very little time. I had a change of plans for my Yorkshire Day exchange book as my favourite living Yorkshire Man already has the book I was first thinking.
Wicked: "Ladies now play golf where formely you could walk unharmed."
I have sometimes thought of seeing Britain by walking, as they have great footpaths and friendly natives, but now I am too old and fat for that sort of fun. My feet would kill me if I even suggested something of the sort. And with my luck it would either be pouring rain or the country would see the worst heat-wave ever.

The book left today, unfinished, I'm afraid. If I was a lady of leisure, I would have read it in the slow pace it needed to be read, but at the moment I just have too much on my plate and I am most probably the last person whose parcel arrives to the man-in-waiting.
That brings me to the other matter. I had something else picked to be put in the envelope with the book, but it had gone into hiding. Keeping order of my things is not my forte. The coaster was a gift of corruption from a long gone veterinary congress I attended in Harrogate in 1989. The opening speech was held by no other than Alf Wight, the real James Herriot.

Thank you Kirjakko. You seem to have changed your "address of sender", but you always do. Crafty!
I'm sure I've seen this book before, on our church bookstall, but it's never been in my hands long enough to take it home and read it, so that's a pleasure I look forward to. The coaster is amazing. I love advertising and promotional memorabilia. I've just bought myself the 41st edition of the Be-ro Flour cookbook. It's been a staple in British households for generations. My grandma had a copy and I'm sure my great grandma did too. This edition comes ready printed with teacup stains and cake mix marks etc.

I think this book has taken me six months or so to read, a little at a time, in between other books and life, which is about the pace you, Kirjakko, suggested it should be read. It was lovely to read about places I love and have a connection to, like beautiful Yorkshire and the Gower. My bus mad father was from the area around the South Downs and his favourite bus company was called Southdown but was actually named after the southdown sheep breed. I have no connection with Hampstead, although I 'nearly' got a job in the vicinity, and I have never visited the States!
I had expected to read more about the author's wife Tilly and totally confused when in the penultimate chapter he suddenly started referring to himself as 'the author' and not 'I' as in the rest of the book. Apart from that I loved it.

Thank you for this book . It looks interesting..
Thank you for all the other things in my parcel too.

What a wonderful book. As a keen walker I have no wish to walk the Appalachian Trail, too many scary animals, but I love reading about people who have. I have walked The Sandstone Trail, in both directions, and The Pennine Way. I have missed walking during lockdown so it was lovely to read this book.
A themed book for my Valentine Day exchange partner.

I think the issue with this book is the fact that he was more focused on his TV series than making this a best seller! Notwithstanding, interesting to have another perspective on a couple of the walks I know. For onward delectation with my elderly neighbours - on the table downstairs in the entrance hall.
