Although some reviews I checked faulted this newest mystery by Donna Leon as stopping abruptly at the end (suggesting an unfinished tale), I think it ended perfectly. Many many years ago the first of this series came out (Death at La Fenice), and here a main character, the opera singer Flavia is brought back. She is the focus of a fan whom she does not know but who is exhibiting all the signs of a dangerous stalker. Donna Leon develops the tale very well, but no spoilers here! Some of the earlier passages deal in-depth with opera and may lose some readers' attention for a bit, and long passages from the Tosca in Italian with no translation are frustrating.... Leon often inserts individual words or phrases in Italian in her mysteries, but the context makes it obvious what the words mean, but these passages are different due to length and complexity! However, all the hallmark charms of her series are in full strength here: Commissario Brunetti and his admirable wife Paola, good food, colleagues both loved and loathed. The tale grows steadier and stronger as the story develops. You may well feel your own skin crawl at the recognition of madness turned murderous, and even though you have faith that Guido and his best bud Vianello will manage to triumph at the end, you will still feel anxious as the final scene unfolds, brilliantly.
