This is a wonderful piece of storytelling. Jackie Hanna and Cushie Moy are childhood sweethearts, born in 1907 and growing up in a NSW country town. She is a beautiful child of a wealthy socialite mother who has married beneath her; he is from much humbler circumstances, and a dwarf.
The story follows their lives up to 1931. It is nothing if not eventful, but also a very convincing evocation of life during the period, in the city and the outback, among people in a wide range of social circumstances.
A really good read!
