I got this good-condition softcover at a local thrift shop. It's a weird-fiction anthology by Canadian author/editor Lalumiere, whose work I wasn't familiar with; very glad I discovered it! Among my favorite stories:

"Objects of Worship," the title story, which pits the love between women with the worship of their god - which is presented as a capricious little being, very demanding, and perhaps a not-too-thinly-veiled analogue for a baby (your mileage may vary).

"The Ethical Treatment of Meat" appears in the beginning to be a rather typical tale of a happy couple, Raymond and George, who decide to adopt a child - but as the story progresses we realize that they're zombies, in a world where the zombies have won and humankind lives only in the form of creatures raised for meat. But some like to make pets of the humans, and turning one into an adopted child seems like a logical step to our heroes... This one gets very creepy indeed, as it's told from the zombies' viewpoint yet makes it all too clear how the hapless humans react... {shudder}

"Hochelaga and Sons" features a world with superheroes in it - and focuses on a man who's been jealous of his superpowered sibling and father, as he has no powers of his own. It combines fun-with-superbattles and some very touching sibling-rivalry-and-affection scenes.

"Njàbò" mixes myth and vengeance, with an artist finding herself possessed by visions of an ancient and powerful elephant deity...

"A Visit to the Optometrist" is a grisly tale - with some dark-humor elements - about the perils of using Lovecraftian-type eldritch beings as replacement parts, even if you are an immortal zombie. (Yes, this one's set in the same 'verse as "Ethical Treatment of Meat".)

And there are more, all of them good, and with unusual spins on monsters, disasters, and human relationships. The author's notes on each story are collected at the end of the book. I'll be looking for more by this author!
