This memoir by Ann Leary (wife of comedian Denis Leary), is both entertaining and frightening. While on vacation in London during the second trimester of her pregnancy, her water broke right in the middle of a busy sidewalk. Her long hospitalization both before (i.e. trying to delay) and after the birth of son Jack, is a real nail-biter. Denis is not always around to comfort her, as his fledgling standup career requires travel. After Ann’s release from the hospital, little Jack has to stay for a long while, so there’s the matter of finding nearby affordable accommodation and navigating a different culture.

It was interesting to see the differences between the National Health Service and the US healthcare system regarding treatment of preemies, especially attitudes and philosophies.

Ms. Leary manages to insert some humor into a serious subject.

I quite enjoyed this memoir, of the author's time staying in London for months while trying to delay the birth of her son so that he had a chance to survive outside the womb, and then afterwards, as the baby lived in an isolette. It was quite an emotional roller coaster for her, and I felt for her that she was in London all alone with little support from her family.

Like the author during the first months of Jack's birth, I did not realize her husband is so famous. lol.
